Like every woman since time began, the choice of her birth attendants and others who are present will shape and to a greater or lesser extent, define the experience for her.  We want to encourage and assist each women to explore her choices.
Hospital Birth
Today, if you live in the United States, depending on what state or area you live in, and how you plan to pay for the pre-natal care and birth, you can choose to be attended by:

     1. a doctor or midwife at home or in a
         birth center
     2. a doctor or certified nurse midwife in
a hospital with labor and delivery
         nursing care
     3. a midwife at home or in a birth
         center

In each of these settings with any of these personnel, you can choose to have a doula attend you to provide information, physical comfort and emotional support during the labor.

In the vast majority of cases, babies born in each of these settings turn out to be healthy.  And having a healthy baby and mother are the most important outcome.

WOMENSHEALTHINWOMENSHANDS.ORG WILL GIVE YOU BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT ALL THE OPTIONS THAT WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES MAY HAVE
, because even though this website definitely is on the midwife/home or birth center side of the issue, we recognize that there are many sound reasons for choosing a hospital birth in advance, and we also note that even if a woman chooses to have a home or birth center birth, that she often ends up giving birth in a hospital on the advice of the doctor or the midwife.
Home Birth
Depending on what setting and what type of birth attendant you choose, you then will be able to determine who else can be with you during the labor and to what extent your friends and family can participate.

Although the book’s information was correct at the time it was written, over the intervening years, research has provided new knowledge and interventions. Just as when the book was written, the benefits of these newer interventions are often overstated by physicians and they are not right for everyone. Meanwhile the full version of the book is now available online and can viewed using PDF. We appreciate any input you may have - we will be working on a version of this book that can be edited...So please let us hear from you!
